He was only a baby when the doctors detected that he has down syndrome and hole-in-heart. After visiting three hospitals: the Akatsi hospital, children’s hospital at the arena in Accra and currently Korle Bu Hospital, doctors recommended surgery to correct the heart defect. As a result of his condition, Joel is unable to breathe appropriately. Notably, he struggles when he is sleeping that you will find him sitting to be able to catch some sleep. His situation gets worse by the day, and due to financial constraints, he has not been able to have the surgery. Joel is being raised by a struggling single mum who has used up all her savings for medications and hospital bills.
Joel’s father abandoned them when he was just two years old.
